The Gap Nobody Noticed
The Angels have won 58 games this season. Their run differential says they should have won roughly 68. That 9.7-win gap between actual and expected record is one of the largest in baseball, and yet it has generated almost no national conversation. The Tigers, sitting atop every MLB luck index ranking at -59, have absorbed most of the cursed-team discourse. Detroit deserves it. But Los Angeles, ranked third in MLB luck rankings with a Luck Index of -48, is running its own quiet disaster, and the silence around it is almost as notable as the numbers.
A Team That Cannot Win Close
The simplest way to find a cursed season is to look at one-run games. The Angels are 17-29 in games decided by a single run, a .370 winning percentage that turns dozens of coin-flip outcomes into losses. Expand the lens slightly to extra innings, where variance should theoretically flatten out over a full season, and the picture gets worse. The Angels are 4-14 in extras. That is a .222 clip across 18 games, a sample just large enough to stop being funny.
Every team loses close games. But losing them at this rate, consistently, across 46 one-run-or-extra-innings decisions, is the kind of sustained misfortune that reshapes a record.
The Statcast Reality Check
Here is where honesty matters. The Angels are not a secretly good team being victimized by fate. Their batting line tells a flat story: a .302 wOBA against a .302 xwOBA, a delta of exactly zero. Their expected batting average (.229) and expected slugging (.373) essentially mirror their actual marks (.232 BA, .371 SLG). The offense is hitting exactly as well as its quality of contact says it should. That quality of contact is simply mediocre.
On the pitching side, the gap is similarly slim. The staff has posted a 4.36 ERA against an expected ERA of 4.45, meaning it has actually slightly outperformed its underlying peripherals. The Angels are not getting unlucky on a per-pitch or per-batted-ball basis. The curse lives in sequencing and timing, not in Statcast's granular expected metrics.
This is a below-average team. The run differential of -78 confirms it. But below-average and 58-94 are two very different things.
Where the Wins Disappeared
A Pythagorean winning percentage of .446 translates to roughly 68 wins over a full 162-game season. With 152 games played, the Angels are on pace for a gap that would place them among the most negatively deviated teams in recent memory. Their actual .382 winning percentage is 64 points below their Pythagorean mark.
The mechanism is not mysterious. When your one-run record is 12 games below .500 and your extra-innings record is 10 games below .500, the arithmetic does itself. The Angels have scored 614 runs and allowed 692, a differential that suggests a team in the high-60s in wins. Instead they are staring at the low side of 60.
They are bad. They are also not this bad.
What Regression Would Actually Look Like
If the Angels played the remaining 10 games of their schedule with perfectly average luck in close contests, the marginal impact would be negligible. The damage is done. But projecting this roster forward into next season with the same underlying talent, a reversion to even a .450 winning percentage in one-run games would recover five to seven wins on its own. An extra-innings record anywhere near .500, rather than .222, would add two or three more.
That is the difference between a 58-win team and a 67-win team. Still not a playoff contender. Still a losing record. But a team that looks like its run differential, rather than one that looks 10 wins worse.
The injury burden this season has been modest, ranked eighth in MLB, so there is no convenient excuse hiding on the injured list. The Angels simply lost the games that could have gone either way, over and over, in a pattern that probability will not sustain.
Next year, the bounces will not all break this badly. That is not optimism. It is math.
