Let's be clear about something first: the Giants are also just not very good. Their 48-67 record reflects a team that has been outscored by 56 runs over 115 games, a run differential that maps to roughly a .450 Pythagorean winning percentage. That is a below-average baseball team by any honest accounting. But .450 is not .417. The gap between what the Giants' run production suggests and what they have actually banked is the width of a small curse.
The Pythagorean Gap
San Francisco's expected win total based on runs scored and runs allowed sits at 51.7. Their actual win total is 48. That delta of -3.7 wins means the Giants have lost the equivalent of nearly four games to nothing but sequencing and timing, runs scored in the wrong innings, runs allowed at the worst possible moments. Over a full 162-game season, that pace projects to roughly five wins lost to variance alone. Five wins would not make the Giants a playoff team. It would make them a team with a different narrative, the kind that fires a coach instead of dismantling a roster.

Statcast Says It's Real (Mostly)

So where is the curse hiding? It is hiding in the sequencing. The Giants are not getting unlucky on individual batted balls or pitches. They are getting unlucky on when those events happen. Their overall process, both hitting and pitching, is mediocre. But mediocre should produce a .450 team, not a .417 one. Regression to the mean would not save the Giants. It would not deliver a playoff berth or justify the front office's decisions.
