A team that played .500 ball in those situations, all else equal, would have five more wins right now. That alone would lift them from 46-63 to a record that looks more like mediocrity than freefall.
But nobody is talking about this, because the Mets are also genuinely not good. And that makes the curse invisible.
Bad and Cursed Are Not Mutually Exclusive
Let's be clear about the baseline. New York has been outscored by 51 runs this season, 449 scored against 500 allowed. Their Pythagorean win percentage sits at .451, which projects to roughly 49 wins through 109 games. That is a below-average baseball team by any honest assessment. The pitching staff carries a 4.10 ERA against a 4.04 xERA, meaning the arms are performing almost exactly as their contact quality suggests. There is no hidden ace waiting to be unlocked by fortune. The Mets' pitching is what it is.
But 49 projected wins is not 46 actual wins. That gap of 3.2 wins is significant. It is the difference between a team hanging around the fringes of relevance and one that has already been written off by the Fourth of July. In MLB luck rankings, New York's Luck Index of -57 places them second in all of baseball, trailing only Detroit's staggering -63. The Tigers get the headlines. The Mets get silence.
Where the Bats Are Getting Robbed
The offense is where the curse lives. The Mets' lineup carries a .307 wOBA against a .323 expected wOBA, a gap of 16 points. Their actual batting average is .237 against an expected .249. Their actual slugging is .389 against an expected .417.
That slugging gap, 28 points, is the number that should make you pause. It means Mets hitters are consistently squaring up baseballs and getting less for it. Line drives are finding gloves. Hard-hit balls are dying on warning tracks. Batted-ball data says this lineup should be producing meaningfully more damage than it has.
Again, the expected numbers do not describe a juggernaut. A .323 xwOBA is still a below-average offense. But it is a materially less painful one.
Extra Innings Offer a Strange Counterweight
Here is where the data gets weird. Despite going 10-20 in one-run decisions overall, the Mets are 8-7 in extra-inning games. In the most volatile, most luck-driven subset of close contests, they have actually been fine. The bleeding has come in regulation one-run losses, where bullpen sequencing, defensive timing, and plain misfortune have conspired against them with unusual consistency.
This is the signature of a cursed season rather than a broken team. Truly bad clubs tend to lose everywhere evenly. The Mets lose specifically in the spots where variance has the most room to operate.
What Regression Would Actually Look Like
The injury burden has been modest, ranked 7th in MLB, so there is no cavalry coming from the injured list. If the Mets' luck simply normalized over the final 53 games, what would that mean in practice?
A team that goes roughly .500 in one-run games instead of .333 picks up perhaps two to three additional wins down the stretch. A lineup whose actual wOBA climbs even halfway toward its expected mark produces another 15 to 20 runs, which translates to roughly two more wins via Pythagorean expectation. Combined, you are looking at a team that finishes closer to 72 or 73 wins instead of the 68 or 69 their current pace projects.
That is not a playoff team. It is not even a particularly interesting one. But it is a team that loses 89 games instead of 94, and in the arithmetic of front-office evaluation, those five phantom losses matter. They shape how you assess a roster, a coaching staff, a development pipeline.
The Mets are not secretly good. They are, however, secretly less bad than their record. And in baseball, where careers and contracts turn on margins this thin, that distinction is worth noticing.
