Hellas Verona generated enough quality chances and defensive resistance to finish on 43 points. They finished on 21.

That 22.07-point gap between expected and actual is not a rounding error. It is not a blip smoothed out by a bad November. Across 38 matches, Verona's underlying process said comfortable survival. Their results said relegation. No team in Serie A this season lost more points to pure variance except Pisa, who sit alone at the top of the cursed rankings with a Luck Index of -89. Verona's -65 is, somehow, the story nobody is telling.

A 43-Point Team on 21 Points

The xPoints model doesn't care about narrative. It takes the shot quality created and conceded in every match and simulates outcomes thousands of times. Verona's 35.65 xG and 50.36 xGA across the season produce an expected points total of 43.07. That's 12th in Serie A on most tables. That's a team watching the relegation battle from a safe distance, not drowning in it.

Instead: 3 wins, 12 draws, 23 losses. Twenty-one points. The draws are where the ghost lives. Twelve stalemates suggest a team that kept getting close to results and almost never converted them into wins. Expected points models would have turned several of those draws into victories and several of those narrow losses into draws. The margins went against Verona virtually every time.

The Finishing Crisis

Verona created chances worth 35.65 expected goals. They scored 25. That finishing delta of -10.65 is staggering over a full season. It means roughly one in every three expected goals simply vanished, missed or saved or struck off the post at a rate well beyond normal variance.

For context, a finishing shortfall of 3-4 goals over a season is unremarkable. Five or six starts raising eyebrows. Losing nearly 11 goals to conversion failure is a team-wide affliction, the kind of drought that turns draws into losses and tight wins into draws, cascading through the table one missed chance at a time.

Defense - Cursed in the Other Direction Too

Verona conceded 61 goals against an xGA of 50.36, a defensive overperformance of -10.64 goals in the wrong direction. They conceded 10.64 more goals than the quality of chances they faced would suggest. Opponents didn't need to create elite opportunities. They just needed to shoot, and the ball found the net at an abnormally high rate.

Combine both sides and the picture is grim. Verona lost roughly 10.65 goals to their own finishing and gifted opponents roughly 10.64 extra goals on defense. That's a 21-goal swing from expected to actual across both ends of the pitch, distributed with almost eerie symmetry.

Some teams get cursed in one box. Verona got cursed in both.

What the Curse Is Not

Honesty requires this section. Verona are not a secretly elite team buried by bad luck. Their net xG of -14.71 confirms they were being outplayed on the balance of chances. They were outshot 513 to 422. They faced a schedule strength of 1.3, meaning their fixture list ran slightly harder than average. Even in the expected-points world, 43 points is survival, not ambition.

But survival is the whole point. The gap between 43 and 21 is the gap between staying up and going down. The underlying quality was limited. The results were catastrophic. Those are two different problems, and the second one was not entirely Verona's fault.

Their injury burden of 78 sat well below the league average of 120, removing one common excuse. And their disciplinary record of 89 yellows and 5 reds was unremarkable. This was not a team undone by absences or indiscipline. It was a team undone by finishing, by defensive variance, and by the compounding mathematics of losing close games.

What Regression Would Have Bought Them

The season is over. All 38 matches are played. But if Verona had simply regressed to expected conversion rates on both ends, the math is straightforward. Approximately 10 more goals scored. Approximately 10 fewer conceded. Several of those 12 draws flip to wins. Several of those 23 losses flip to draws.

Forty-three points keeps you in Serie A. Twenty-one does not. The process said stay. The results said go.

The curse said nothing at all. It never does.
