Serie A's Luck Ledger: Who's Getting Cheated by the Numbers

xPoints gaps through five matchdays reveal a league where the table and the underlying football barely share a language.

Every table tells a story. Sometimes that story is fiction.

The xPoints gap measures the difference between the points a team has actually collected and the points they'd be expected to hold based on xG-driven Poisson simulations of every match. It doesn't care about vibes, tactics debates, or post-match pressers. It cares about shot quality in, shot quality against, and what the scoreboard should have read if finishing and goalkeeping regressed to league-average conversion. Five rounds into the 2026-27 Serie A season, the gap between what should be happening and what is happening is already wide enough to walk a defense through.

Most Cursed by xPoints Gap

1. Bologna (2 pts, 7.6 xPts - gap: -5.6) The underlying performances say Bologna should be comfortably mid-table. The actual table says they're staring into the abyss. A 5.6-point deficit this early is the kind of number that usually self-corrects, but it's a miserable place to wait for mathematics to show up.

2. Monza (4 pts, 9.1 xPts - gap: -5.1) Monza's models think they should have 9.1 points, which would put them near the top of the table. Instead, they have four. The shot quality has been there. The results have not.

3. Venezia (0 pts, 4.9 xPts - gap: -4.9) Zero points is hard to spin. But 4.9 expected points from the same fixtures suggests Venezia have been generating enough danger to have something to show for it. They just don't.

4. Genoa (1 pt, 5.3 xPts - gap: -4.3) One point from five matches looks like a crisis. The xG profile says it's closer to a rough patch with catastrophically bad luck layered on top.

5. Fiorentina (4 pts, 8.2 xPts - gap: -4.2) Fiorentina should, by the models' estimation, be sitting on 8.2 points. They're on half that. Their finishing or their goalkeeping, possibly both, has been out of step with the chances created and conceded.

Most Blessed by xPoints Gap

1. Cagliari (12 pts, 5.7 xPts - gap: +6.3) Twelve points from underlying performances worth 5.7. Cagliari are currently running on a surplus larger than some teams' entire tallies. Enjoy it while the spreadsheet stays quiet.

2. Lazio (13 pts, 8.0 xPts - gap: +5.0) Lazio sit top of the table with 13 points, and they've genuinely been good. But five of those points arrived from somewhere the models can't account for.

3. Frosinone (10 pts, 5.2 xPts - gap: +4.8) Frosinone's shot data says they should be scrapping for survival-range points. Instead, they have ten. That's nearly double what the simulations expected.

4. AC Milan (11 pts, 8.0 xPts - gap: +3.0) Milan's gap is the most modest among the blessed, which is another way of saying their strong start has the most structural support. Three bonus points is a nice cushion, not a house of cards.

5. Lecce (6 pts, 3.3 xPts - gap: +2.7) Six points from 3.3 expected. Lecce are quietly outperforming their underlying numbers by nearly double, which tends to be unsustainable but is perfectly pleasant in September.

What This Tells Us

The full range here spans 11.9 points, from Bologna's -5.6 to Cagliari's +6.3. That's enormous for five matchdays, but not unprecedented. Historically in Serie A, xPoints gaps of this magnitude regress significantly by matchday 15, with roughly 60-70% of the variance correcting itself by mid-season. Teams on the cursed end tend to climb. Teams on the blessed end tend to drift.

The table is real. The points count. But five games into a season, the gap between what happened and what the chances suggested should have happened is a useful reminder: some of what you're watching is football, and some of it is just dice.
