Serie A Regression Watch: The Table Is Lying to You

Bologna are 4.86 xPoints below their actual total. The early standings need an asterisk.

Three weeks into the Serie A season, the table already has a credibility problem. Bologna have generated a net expected goal difference of +2.31, the kind of underlying profile that typically corresponds to a side sitting comfortably in the top half. Instead, they find themselves nearly five expected points below where the data says they should be. The standings say one thing. The process says another.

A reminder before we proceed: we are working with matchweeks you can count on one hand. Variance is king in small samples. These numbers are signals, not verdicts, and every gap discussed below could be noise dressed up as narrative. Treat accordingly.

Due a Correction

Bologna carry the largest xPoints gap in Serie A at -4.86, paired with that healthy +2.31 net xG. They are creating quality chances, conceding relatively few, and somehow have almost nothing to show for it. Their Luck Index sits at -13. In historical terms, teams running this cold against their underlying numbers over the opening weeks tend to see meaningful correction within the next five to eight matches. The market may still be anchored to their early results rather than the process behind them.

Monza post a Luck Index of -15 and an xPoints gap of -4.43, despite generating a net xG of +1.89. That is a side outplaying opponents in terms of expected output by a significant margin and watching the results go sideways. Bookmakers tend to be slow to adjust prices for newly promoted or mid-table sides when the underlying data diverges this sharply from actual points. The gap between perception and process here is wide.

Fiorentina share Monza's -15 Luck Index but with a crucial difference: their net xG is -0.61. They are being unlucky in terms of points relative to expected points (-4.32 gap), but the underlying chance creation is not especially encouraging. This is the trickiest profile of the three. The xPoints model says they deserve more, but the shot quality data is not exactly screaming dominance. Regression upward is plausible. Just not as forcefully as the other two.

Living on Borrowed Luck

Frosinone lead the overperformance charts with a Luck Index of +17 and a net xG of -3.06. They are being outshot, out-created, and generally outplayed on the underlying numbers, yet sitting 3.66 points above where the model thinks they belong. Variance like this typically regresses, and it tends to regress faster than the positive kind.

Sometimes the math is polite. Sometimes it just stares at you.

Como carry a Luck Index of +13 and an xPoints gap of +2.80 despite a net xG of essentially zero (0.02). They have been neither good nor bad in terms of chance quality, yet their points tally suggests something more flattering. The lines imply the market may already be pricing in some of this noise, but Como's early-season prices could still reflect inflated perception.

Atalanta present the most striking case. A net xG of -4.99 is a brutal underlying profile, the worst in this sample by a wide margin. Yet they sit 4.77 expected points above where the data places them, with a Luck Index of +12. Atalanta's reputation and recent pedigree likely influence how the market frames them, but the process numbers through the opening weeks are not kind.

A net xG of -4.99 does not care about your brand.

The Regression Window

In Serie A and comparable leagues, luck-driven gaps of this magnitude in the opening weeks tend to close over the next five to ten matches. The mechanism is straightforward: finishing rates normalize, save percentages revert, and the quality of chances created starts to assert itself in the actual scorelines. This is not a guarantee, and small-sample caveats apply in bold. But the historical pattern is consistent enough that the market typically begins adjusting within this window. What you do with that information is, as always, entirely your business.
