The Five Unluckiest Teams in World Sport Right Now

From Detroit to Valencia, five clubs the numbers say deserve better than their records show.

The Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels, Valencia, and Auxerre have almost nothing in common. They span two sports, three leagues, two continents, and a combined century-plus of institutional dysfunction. What binds them this week is a single, shared humiliation: the underlying numbers insist they should be better than their records. Not great. Not even good, necessarily. But measurably, provably less miserable than the standings suggest. Our mlb luck index and cross-sport LuckScore model flag all five as significant outliers. Here's the rundown.

1. Detroit Tigers - MLB

The Tigers sit at 65-78, a record that looks like a team drifting quietly toward the offseason. Their Pythagorean expectation says otherwise. Based on runs scored and runs allowed, Detroit profiles as roughly a 77-win team, a 12-win gap that registers a Luck Index of -62, the worst in global sport right now.

Twelve wins is not a rounding error. It's the difference between a team shopping at the deadline and a team buyers are calling. Detroit has been competitive in far more games than the record reflects. Their one-run game record reads like a hostage note.

Regression to the Pythagorean mean doesn't happen on command, but a gap this large almost always narrows. If the Tigers play to their run differential the rest of the way, something close to .530 ball, they'd finish near 82 wins. That probably still misses October, but it would make the final month a good deal less bleak.

2. San Francisco Giants - MLB

San Francisco's 59-85 record is the kind of line that gets a front office reshuffled. Their Pythagorean projection of roughly 64 wins is not exactly a ringing endorsement either, but the five-win deficit still translates to a Luck Index of -60.

The Giants have been outscored in a manner consistent with a below-average team. They have lost in a manner consistent with a historically bad one. The distinction matters, mostly to the people writing the checks.

Five phantom wins might not sound like much until you remember that San Francisco's season narrative would shift entirely from "rebuild" to "disappointing but functional" with that correction. Context is everything in September.

3. Los Angeles Angels - MLB

At 54-89, the Angels are genuinely struggling. But even genuine struggles have gradations, and their Pythagorean record of approximately 63 wins means they've left nine wins somewhere on the field. That's a Luck Index of -45, third-worst globally.

Nine wins is the gap between "bad" and "unwatchable," and the Angels have spent most of the summer on the wrong side of that line. Their expected record wouldn't save the season, but it would make the rebuild case slightly less dire.

The pattern across all three MLB clubs is consistent: close-game futility converting reasonable run differentials into lopsided records. The luckscore model picks this up as finishing variance, the tendency for tight outcomes to cluster against a team beyond what their talent level would predict.

4. Valencia - La Liga

Valencia have one point from four La Liga matches. Their expected points tally, derived from expected goals luck models, says they should have 4.4. That's a Luck Index of -21 in a season barely three weeks old.

Small samples deserve skepticism, and four matches is a small sample. But Valencia's shot quality and defensive positioning have been broadly adequate. The finishing has not. They've conceded goals at a rate well above what the chances against them would suggest, a pattern that tends to correct but can leave real damage to a season's trajectory if it lingers into October.

5. Auxerre - Ligue 1

Auxerre sit on zero points from three Ligue 1 fixtures. Their xPoints model spits out 2.9, nearly a full win's worth of value lost to variance. A Luck Index of -20 through three games is a remarkable rate of misfortune, even by early-season standards.

Three matches without a point is grim. Three matches without a point when the underlying chance creation says you should have nearly three is something else. Auxerre's expected goals data paints a team that has been competitive in every fixture. The table does not agree.

The Common Thread

Across all five teams, the pattern is the same: finishing variance. Goals that should have gone in didn't. Leads that should have held didn't. Close games broke the wrong way at a rate that outstripped reasonable expectation. None of these teams are world-beaters underneath the noise, but all five have been punished beyond what their underlying performance warranted. Luck, in sport, is never distributed evenly. This week, these five know that better than anyone.
