2. San Francisco Giants - MLB
San Francisco's 64-92 record looks like a team that simply wasn't good enough. The Pythagorean projection of roughly 69 wins doesn't transform them into contenders, but it does reframe the season. Five phantom losses is the difference between a disappointing year and a dismal one.
Their luck index sits at -55, second-worst in baseball. The Giants' run differential suggests a team that competed more often than the record indicates, particularly in games where they scored first and still lost. That specific subset, leads surrendered in the late innings, has been quietly brutal for San Francisco all summer.
3. Los Angeles Angels - MLB
The Angels are 60-96. Pythagorean says roughly 69 wins. A nine-game gap.
At a luck index of -45, Los Angeles rounds out an MLB sweep of the top three spots in this week's rankings. The Angels have been outscored by a margin consistent with a below-average team, certainly, but not a 96-loss team. 5. Málaga - La Liga
Málaga have zero wins through seven rounds. Three draws and four losses. Three points earned, 7.1 expected. They are, by xPoints, the unluckiest team in Spain's top division.
Their luck index of -22 is driven almost entirely by defensive overperformance being canceled out by attacking underperformance. Málaga are conceding close to what the models expect but scoring well below their xG. The finishing just hasn't been there, and in football, finishing variance in small samples can make a mid-table team look like a relegation candidate overnight.
The Common Thread
