Regression Watch: Gladbach's Luck Index Screams for Correction, Freiburg and Elversberg Skating on Thin Ice

The Bundesliga's biggest xPoints gaps are flashing warning signs through matchday seven.

Bottom line: Gladbach's Luck Index of -26 is the largest negative divergence in the Bundesliga, and variance that extreme almost never survives the next five matches.

Through October 13, 2026, the Bundesliga table is lying to you in at least six places. According to FBref expected-points data, the gap between what teams have earned and what the underlying chances say they should have earned is wider than at any comparable point last season. Borussia Mönchengladbach are the loudest signal in the dataset, but they are not the only one. Three clubs are playing better football than their points suggest, and three others are collecting results their processes have no business producing.

The standings know the scores. They do not know the chances.

Due a Correction

Borussia Mönchengladbach carry a Luck Index of -26, the most extreme negative reading in the division. Their xPoints gap sits at -4.64, meaning the scoreboard has shortchanged them by nearly five points relative to the quality of chances created and conceded. A net xG of -4.96 suggests the finishing and goalkeeping luck flowing against them has been severe. Markets tend to lag these corrections by a match or two, and bookmakers pricing Gladbach as if their current points tally reflects their true level may be undervaluing them.

Union Berlin show a Luck Index of -14 with a modest xPoints gap of -1.06 but a glaring net xG of -5.40. That combination points to a team whose underlying chance quality has been poor but whose results have been even worse than the poor process warrants. The conversion numbers on both ends of the pitch have gone against them at a rate that historically corrects within a handful of matches.

Eintracht Frankfurt register a Luck Index of -10, an xPoints gap of -0.87, and a net xG of -2.84. The gap is smaller here, but the direction is consistent. Frankfurt are generating and conceding chances at a level that should have them sitting roughly a point higher in the table. Lines that treat Frankfurt as a sliding club may not be accounting for the shot-quality edge they are still producing.

Living on Borrowed Luck

TeamLuck IndexxPoints GapNet xG
SC Freiburg+20-0.35-3.57
FC Augsburg+19+0.24+0.14
SV Elversberg+19-2.15+3.92

SC Freiburg have a Luck Index of +20 despite an xPoints gap of just -0.35, a quirk driven by a net xG of -3.57. They are being outchanced meaningfully yet picking up results. That pattern relies on finishing variance and goalkeeper overperformance, two of the least sustainable signals in football analytics.

FC Augsburg are the closest to genuinely earning their position, with a near-neutral xPoints gap and net xG. But a Luck Index of +19 still flags them as a team whose close-game outcomes have broken their way at an unsustainable clip. Augsburg in one-goal games is a trend worth monitoring.

SV Elversberg present the most interesting case. A net xG of +3.92 means they are actually generating far better chances than their opponents, yet their xPoints gap is -2.15 and their Luck Index reads +19. The implication: Elversberg are creating plenty but converting at an elevated rate that flatters their points tally beyond what even good underlying numbers justify.

Sometimes the numbers and the vibes agree. This is not one of those times.

The Regression Window

In Bundesliga data over the past five seasons, teams carrying a Luck Index beyond plus or minus 15 through seven matchdays have seen roughly 60 to 70 percent of that gap close over the subsequent five to ten fixtures, per FBref historical xPoints trends. The correction is not instant and it is not guaranteed, but the base rate is clear. Variance of this magnitude tends to compress. How quickly it does so, and whether the market adjusts before or after, is the question that makes these numbers worth watching.
